How search works

Search happens differently in different parts of the community, so where you start your search affects your results.

That’s an important concept to understand because it might explain why you’re not finding what you want.

If you’re not sure where the content you want might be located, search from the Home page. Searching from the Home page shows you unrestricted results from all content sources across the entire community.

If you have an idea where you might find the information you want, you can go to that area/module and immediately narrow your results. Searching from within a module, like the Insights hub or the Knowledge Base, limits results to content within that module.

About the Search banner

The Search banner displays on the Home page and when you drill down into a module in the community, such as the Insights hub or the Knowledge Base.

About search methods

You can search the community using these two methods: live and manual.

You can use both search methods whenever you search anywhere in the community.

Live search

Live search proposes results as you type your query. Where you start your search affects your results.

Examples

Location Results Example
Home page Unrestricted results from all content sources in the community.
Live search results from the Home page
Module page Limited to content only within that module.

Manual search

Manual search shows you results after you type your query and press EnterWhere you start your search affects your results.

Examples

 Location Results Example
Home page Unrestricted results from all content sources in the community.
Manual search results from the Home page
Module page Limited to content only within that module.

Search criteria

When you search using either method from anywhere in the community, the following criteria are used to filter results.

  • Title (content)
  • First post (content)
  • Whether the result is an article
  • Whether it’s tagged as a best answer is the result is a question
  • Replies
  • Tags
  • Subcategory
  • Category

Result ranking

The order in which your results are listed is determined by a ranking formula. The formula compares each of the following criteria one after another.

  • Typos
  • Number of words from your query that match
  • Proximity of the terms in your query to each other
  • Attribute weighting based on the Search criteria listed above.

The ranking is also influenced by the criteria (ordered by most important first; location within the field of the search term doesn’t matter).

  • Is it an article (true or false Boolean field)
  • Was the topic solved (true or false Boolean field)
  • Date when the topic was last updated
  • Number of likes
  • Replies
  • Views

Tips...

If you can’t find what you’re looking for in the community, try these actions.

  • Use live search first. You may get better results.
  • Make your query as generic as possible.
  • Try alternative nouns or verbs.
